National Taiwan Museum

When National Taiwan Museum opened in 1908, the exhibits were mainly divided into geological minerals, plants, animals, human instruments, historical and educational materials, agricultural materials, forestry materials, aquatic products, mining materials, handicrafts, trade, etc., plus other common twelve categories. After entering the gate, the first thing that catches the eye is the forest product. The large space is centered on the magnificent pith paper plant flower box, surrounded by various industrial models, next to it is agricultural specimens, and there is a high platform on which the owner of the building is placed, the lottery machine. One room is dedicated to displaying handicraft specimens, and the other is displaying some historical materials. Above the entrance gate of the second floor, there are animals, insects and plants on the left, and aquatic products on the right. The corner of the handrail is five hundred guns confiscated from the aborigines, which are displayed as a memorial to the conquest.

The upper part of the children's room is displayed with the local products of the aborigines, and there is a display of plant wax leaf specimens at the corner of the VIP room. The upper room of the management office exhibits geological minerals. On the wall of the aborigines room, there are two paintings of the front line painting by Ishikawa Kinichiro sent from the police headquarters. One is centered on the Marapan Mountain in Dongshi, and the other one is centered on Pillow Mountain in Daxi, each depicting the terrain of the caves in the area.


The first part of the new century permanent exhibition at the National Taiwan Museum -“Discovering Taiwan: Re-visiting the Age of Natural History and Naturalist of Taiwan" is an exhibition returning to the museum's collection.

A total of 367 pieces of natural history specimens and cultural relics are displayed in the exhibition hall, of which 265 pieces belong to the collection of the National Taiwan Museum. Among the 265 collections of the National Taiwan Museum, there are many from historical specimens collected by the famous discoverers, such as Atayal’s cloth, prehistorical stone tools, and bird specimens collected from Mori Ushinosuke and Yonetaro at the beginning of the last century.

There are also some "historical first exhibitions" that are not collected by famous naturalists, such as the Monarudo shell beads ankle ornaments collected by the Sakuma Foundation in the late 1920s that were discovered in recent years.
